Ephs Drop Game to Connecticut College, 4-2

NEW LONDON , CT – The Williams College women's ice hockey team (1-4-0) suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Connecticut College (3-1-1) in a conference game tonight. Penalties certainly played a factor in this evening's match up, as the Ephs racked up 10 penalties compared to the Camels' 2.

Freshman Lauren Zurek scored first for the Ephs at 13:12 into the first period. For her first collegiate goal, Zurek was assisted by freshman Stephanie Berger.

Connecticut College came back in the second period to score at 4:06 when Erin Davey netted an assist from Stephanie Quinn. The Ephs answered with a goal of their own when sophomore Tracey Ferriter scored on a power play, off a feed from freshman Erin Mandigo at 7:33.

Williams, however, was unable to maintain the lead in the third period. The Camels took advantage of the Ephs' consecutive penalties to score on a power play.  Caroline Jeffery, assisted by Quinn, notched the tying goal at 15:23. Less than a minute later, Connecticut College pulled ahead when Kristen Van Slyke scored unassisted. Quinn scored the final goal for the Camels at 19:11 on an empty net.

Connecticut College out shot the Ephs 46 to 22, with Eph goaltender Denise McCulloch making 42 saves.

In the end, the game really came down to penalties. “That was the difference in the game. We didn't play disciplined hockey today and that showed on the scoreboard,” said Coach Shannon Bryant.

The Ephs face NESCAC and Little Three rival Amherst tomorrow at 7:00 pm
