WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College men's hockey team fell to #1 ranked SUNY-Plattsburgh 8-1, Saturday. SUNY Plattsburgh and elmira are tied for first in the USCHO.com poll.

Coming in, the Ephs were trying to sustain their momentum from last weeks victory over Salem State, while the Cardinals were trying to get back on track following last nights loss to Middlebury.

However, the Cardinals didn't seem to have missed a beat, netting the games first two goals from Shawn Dennis and Joey Wilson only 3:11 into the first period. The Ephs were able to get over their early jitters and battled back, killing a late power play before ending the period down two.

SUNY-Plattsburgh broke through the Williams defense in the first half of the second period, tallying three goals from Dylan Clarke, Dan Sliasis, and Mike Baccaro just over eight minutes into the period.

Alex Smigelski put one in for the Ephs with six minutes remaining in the period, but the Cardinals completely controlled as they held play in the Eph end, while limiting Eph incursions into their half of the ice.

The score would remain 5-1 until the 13:22 mark of the third period when SUNY-Plattsburgh forward Phil Farrow converted a quick burst of passes off of the power play. The Cardinals would add two more goals off of Eric Greene and T.J. Cooper before the period ended, making the games final score 8-1.

The loss marked the first start of the season for Eph goalkeeper Rick Redmond, who netted an impressive 47 saves despite the eight goals. The Cardinals held a 48 to 19 shot on goal advantage, and netted five of their eight goals off of power plays.

“They are the second ranked team in the nation for power play efficiency, and we gave them too many power plays.” Remarked Eph coach Bill Kangas, “But, they are a great team, and hopefully it was a lesson for us going into the break.”

The Ephs next game is scheduled for January 5th against Hobart, following the winter break.
