HENNIKER, NH – The Williams College
men's hockey team recorded two goals in the games final ten
minutes to earn the 3-3 overtime draw against New England College
Saturday night. The tie snaps a three game losing streak for the
Ephs (5-8-2), while NEC (10-2-3) marks its second tie in as many
games.
The first period was all Pilgrims, as they
dominated possesssion and recorded a 25-9 shot advantage. However,
the Eph defense, led by the stellar goaltending of Marc Pulde (51
saves), was able to contain the NEC attack for most of the period;
only allowing one goal of off the power play with only 4:38
remaining in the period.
However, senior Will Bruce, who early this
week was awarded the prestigious Wooden Cup as an outstanding role
model in Collegiate athletics, got the Ephs on the board only 2:09
into the second period when he converted an Octavian Jordan pass to
tie things up at 1-1.
Bruce's effort would be answered and
then some fifteen minutes later when Brian Pouliot scored two goals
in two minutes to restore and then push the Pilgrim advantage to
3-1. NEC would go on to record a 19-11 shot advantage for the
period.
The games final period would be a reversal of
sorts for the Ephs, as they used their best impression of the
Pilgrims first period performance to physically push around NEC and
dominate the period. Alex Smigelski and Brett Haraguchi recorded
goals at 10:23 and 13:23 respectively to even the score at 3-3. The
Ephs transition was expmlified in their 19-9 shots on goal
advantage for the final period.
The game would spill into overtime, but
neither team could snap the deadlock and the game ended with the
3-3 tie.
The Ephs next look to get back into the win
column tomorrow against St. Anslem College at 4:00 PM.
