WATERVILLE, Me. — Meera Sivalingam made the most of her
opportunity Sunday, and the Williams College field hockey team
reaped the benefits, rallying for a 2-1 road win over Colby.
Sivalingam scored a second-half goal off an assist from Anne de
Saint Phalle and the Ephs withstood a barrage of penalty corners
from the Mules in the final five minutes to improve to 6-5 overall
and 3-4 in the NESCAC.
Williams will host non-conference foe Union Wednesday at 6 p.m.
"It was our first come-from-behind win of the season, so that
was very nice to see," Ephs coach Alix Rorke said. "I was very
impressed with the way we played today, we were poised under
pressure and our communication and hustle were much better,
especially considering the tough loss we had Saturday at Tufts."
Colby jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the contest, but
Williams tied it mid-way through the first half when de Saint
Phalle converted a nice pass from Meghan McGowan into a goal.
With the game still tied in the second half, Rorke decided to
insert Sivalingham, a first-year, and classmate Lucy Rollins to
forward positions while a couple of veterans took a quick breather
on the sideline.
Sivalingam, who normally plays in the midfield, made her coach
look like a genius very quickly, scoring off an assist from de
Saint Phalle.
"They have both been really improving and stepping it up in
practice," Rorke said. "The funny thing was, we were playing well
up front, we just needed to get a couple of kids a breather and we
thought, "why not." We just wanted to see how they would do and it
paid off."
Colby made a serious effort to net the equalizer over the final
five minutes, but were stymied by the Ephs' staunch defense and
goalkeeper Katrina Tulla, who finished with five saves. Williams
outshot Colby, 11-9, but the Mules held an 13-8 edge in penalty
corners.
