AMHERST, MA. – Women's soccer
(12-0-1, 7-0-1) headed to Amherst (8-1-3, 6-0-2) knowing full well
that facing the second ranked team in New England, and the
ninth-ranked team in the nation, in Lord Jeff territory would be
their hardest game of the season by miles.
With their undefeated record, the Little Three
title, and sheer bragging rights against their archrival at stake,
the Ephs avoided a painstaking loss by scoring late in regulation
to end the contest in a 1-1 tie following two overtime
periods.
It may not be a loss in the record books, but
it certainly is not another tally to add that to that win column
either. Anything but
a victory against Amherst for any Williams squad is disappointing.
In what appeared to be an upset in the making,
the Lord Jeffs held the #1 Ephs scoreless for a staggering 88
minutes. After a
bobbled save by the Amherst keeper, Gabrielle Woodson capitalized
on the undefended net and scored uncontested with just over one and
a half minute left on the clock. Amherst
narrowly edged out the Ephs in shots, 18-17, but the late defensive
slip up cost the home team the win.
Amherst scored their lone goal at 24:35 when
wet conditions proved to be favorable for the home
team. An Eph defender misplayed a feed into the
goal box due to the slick playing field, and the Lord Jeffs'
Jackie Hirsch laced a shot into net to take early momentum in the
first half.
In overtime, neither team could create
formidable offense and settled for the tie after 110 minutes of
play. The game closed
out a demanding week for the Ephs players, who played four games in
eight days and were pushed to the brink physically.
Williams will look to bounce back in their
final regular season contest when they host Middlebury on Friday,
October 31 at 2:00 p.m on Cole
Field.
