WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Junior Blake Schultz hit on 8 of 15
shots from the floor Tuesday night en route to a game-high 24
points as the Williams College men's basketball team ran away
from Little 3 rival Wesleyan, 84-52, at Chandler Gymnasium.
The Cardinals fell to 0-3 on the year while Williams improved to
3-1. The Ephs are off until Friday, when they match-up with
Framingham State in a 5:30 p.m. start at the UMass-Boston Harbor
Invitational.
The Ephs were in high-octane, up-tempo mode for most of the
night, taking 43 three-point shots and connecting on 16 of them.
Sophomore Harlan Dodson scored 15 points on five threes and senior
Kevin Snyder added 16, 12 coming from beyond the arc.
“This offense, this system, is designed to take what the
defense gives you,” Williams head coach Mike Maker said.
“I was okay (with 43 three-point shots) tonight because I
thought Wesleyan did a good job taking some back cuts away from
us.”
David Maltz led the Cardinals with 15 points on 7 of 15 shooting
from the floor, and guard Jeremy Kaminer pitched in 12.
Williams jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before Wesleyan rallied
to knot the game at nine with 12 minutes and 17 seconds left in the
first half on a pair of free throws from Jason Mendall. Williams
held a slim 23-18 advantage with 5:04 remaining, but finished the
half on a 15-4 run that included 12 straight points.
Dodson had two of his treys during the run, while junior Alex
Rubin and senior captain Michael Kearney also chipped in from long
distance. Schultz did the work from inside, scoring six points,
four from the foul line, and the Ephs led 38-22 at the break.
Williams shot 35 percent (7 of 20) from the three-point line in
the opening 20 minutes while holding Wesleyan to just 33 percent (8
of 24) from the floor. The Ephs also took care of the basketball,
turning it over only twice in the half, compared to nine for the
visitors.
“I thought our defensive intensity was the difference in
the game,” Maker said. “I think our defense is getting
better and better. It has been consistent because we've kept
it simple and because of the effort we're getting from the
kids.”
The Cardinals came out strong in the second stanza and traded
buckets with Williams over the first five minutes. Maltz worked the
paint well for a couple of close-range buckets, but Wesleyan never
came closer than 14 points.
Williams continued to shoot well from beyond the arc as the Ephs
hit on 9 of 23 (39.1 percent) of their three-pointers in the second
half. To complement that, sophomore forward Troy Whittington came
off the bench and scored six of his nine interior points.
Junior Ethan Timmons-Schiffman also worked the paint well, scoring
five of his eight points over the final 20 minutes.
The Ephs led 52-34 when a 13-0 run put the game out of reach.
Schultz, Rubin and Snyder hit big threes during the run, with
Snyder's trey from the top of the key capping the uprising
and giving Williams a 65-34 lead with 11 minutes remaining.
The Ephs outrebounded Wesleyan 43-36 with Schultz's eight
boards leading the way. William Hardy contributed six. Maltz topped
Wesleyan with seven. Snyder topped Williams with eight assists on
the night.
