Williamstown, MA — The
Ephs had an exciting weekend, playing three matches in two days
against NESCAC rival Bowdoin and two of the top teams in the
country, Princeton and Trinity. On top of this tough schedule,
Williams played with almost half of their lineup gone, with two of
their top nine players abroad, and two others out with illnesses.
The Ephs nevertheless came out strong in their
first match on Saturday against Trinity, with three of the top six
regular starters taking a game off of their opponent. Co-captain
Arianna Kourides took the first game of her match 9-1 and played
the remaining three games closely before succumbing to the strong
Trinity player. Also leading the team were co-captain Claire Hsu
and junior Caroline Henry, who managed to keep their opponents on
the defense for long enough to each collect a game.
In the second match of the day, Williams
played against the Bowdoin Polar Bears. Having recruited two tennis
players to play at the bottom of the ladder, the Ephs managed
victories all the way down the lineup. The bottom of the Williams
lineup had especially strong performances against a less deep
Bowdoin team, with numbers 9, 8, 6 and 5 finishing their opponents
in three games.
The Ephs fell 9-0 to Trinity, but rebounded to
defeat Bowdoin 9-0 on Saturday.

Exhausted from the previous day, the Ephs
stepped on court yet again on Sunday morning to face off against
last year's National Champion team. The Princeton Tigers came
out strong, and the fatigue quickly set in, with all Eph players
losing in three games. Princeton previaled 9-0. However, Jennifer
Coxe stepped up into the number one position to face a very strong
opponent, playing out three highly competitive games, and ending
the weekend on a high note.
“Despite the many setbacks we have faced
in the past few weeks, every single member of the team showed up at
the courts ready to give their all,” said Henry. “In
addition, I think we owe a huge thanks to all of the tennis players
who were willing to lend a hand this weekend - we definitely
couldn't have done it without them.”
