CLAREMONT, CA. -- Morgan Simpson's two-out, two-strike, two-run
single in the top of the seventh inning Monday snapped a 4-4 tie
and led the Williams College softball team to a 6-4 win over Pomona
Pitzer. The Ephs couldn't overcome a four-run first inning in the
nightcap, dropping a 6-2 decision to Claremont Mudd Scripps.
Williams is now 7-5 on its West Coast swing. The Ephs play
Willamette Tuesday at 1 p.m. PST and defending national champion
Linfield at 3:30 p.m.
"We're looking for that perfect game and we haven't found it
yet," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "But we battled hard in
both games today. In the first game we had 10 hits over the last
four innings and came from behind to win, so that was good for us.
And we had some great at-bats up and down the line-up in the second
game, we just didn't get the clutch hits we needed."
The Ephs put together a two-run rally in the top of the seventh
against Pomona to win 6-4. Katie Blankshain got things started with
a lead-off single. After an out, Becky Sansone singled. Senior
Katie Powers then ripped a one-hop single to left that loaded the
bases.
After a grounder forced Blankshain at home for the second out,
Simpson lined a 1-2 pitch to center field for two runs and a 6-4
lead. The junior then reliever Williams starter Caitlyn Cain to
start the bottom of the seventh and retired Pomona 1-2-3 to earn a
save.
Cain earned the win by throwing six gutsy innings, allowing
seven hits and four runs, three earned, while walking four and
fanning two. She also went 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI and a
run scored.
Simpson was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored as well. Libby
Copeland-Halperin went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
In the nightcap, Claremont Mudd Scripps erupted for four runs in
the bottom of the first on two home runs off Williams starter Emily
Fowler-Cornfeld. The Ephs got one back in the second when Powers
walked and scored on a Fowler-Cornfeld double. The Ephs added an
unearned run in the third to make it 4-2 but could get no closer.
Williams left two runners on base in the second, third, fifth
and sixth and 10 in total.
Fowler-Cornfeld took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned,
over two-plus innings. She walked two, struck out one and gave up
three hits. Simpson tossed the final four frames, allowing four
hits and two walks while fanning two.
