WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Williams College women's lacrosse
team was undone by a fierce Colby College rally Wednesday as the
Ephs, who led at halftime, dropped a 20-12 decision in a Spring
Fling contest.
The Ephs came out strong and held a one-goal lead at halftime,
7-6. Junior midfielder Britt Spackman had six points in the first
half alone (2 goals, 4 assists). Senior Allison Murray scored two
of her five goals and Tracey Ferriter also had two tallies.
The game remained close midway through the second half. Williams
stll led 8-6 and 9-7, on goals by Whitney Thayer and Murray. But
the Mules responded with five straight scores to take a 12-9 lead.
Williams fought back and trailed by just one, 13-12, after Murray
scored her final tally of the game with 13:38 remaining.
However, Colby responded with seven straight goals over the
final 11:27 to pull away for the 20-12 win. The Mules outshot
Williams, 41-28, and held a 28-3 advantage in draw controls.
Williams goaltender Julia Schreiber made 14 saves.
"We played well for the first half," Ephs head coach Chris Mason
said. "We always talk about not becoming overconfident, but it
seemed like we did get overconfident in the second half. We had too
many turnovers. Against good teams like Colby we have to eliminate
or at least minimize our unforced errors."
Spackman finished with six points while Murray had a team-high
five goals. Colby's Kate Sheridan scored six goals and added two
assists for eight points.
