WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – Men's tennis
continues to impress as the fourth-ranked Ephs swept NESCAC foe
Wesleyan, 9-0. The
Williams co-captains, Dan Greenberg and Gary Simonette, have
enjoyed four consecutive years as Little Three champions as
Williams has not lost a Little Three title since the 1994
season.
“A Little Three title is great for our
senior class,” said Williams head coach Dave
Donn. “To win it all four years is quite
an accomplishment.”
After edging Middlebury for the first time
since 2002 this past Wednesday, the Ephs' confidence is evident in
their play. The match
began with singles play, as the teams expected to play the match
until the five points had been won for a
victory.
Greenberg served for the first set of his
match at court one at 5-4 before his opponent broke his serve to
even the match. In
the tiebreak, the Eph senior was the victor and dominated in the
second set, 6-1.
At courts two through six, Williams rolled
along with five other straight set victories.
Karol Furmaga did not give up a single game at court four to notch
his first NESCAC victory of the season, while freshman Ari Binder
picked up a win in his first varsity singles debut in a 6-1, 6-3
showing.
The teams decided to continue to doubles play
despite the Ephs having clinched the win. The
Williams pairs did not lose a step, and cruised in doubles play.
“Our doubles has been looking
good,” continued Donn. “Every time
we play our doubles play is getting better and that's very
encouraging.”
Williams is now undefeated in NESCAC play with
a 3-0 record, and improves their overall record to
11-1. Wesleyan's record falls to 5-7 on
the season, and the Cardinals remain winless in NESCAC play at
0-5.
The Ephs will take on Connecticut College at
home tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
