WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Junior Libby Copeland-Halperin
connected for a pair of two-run homers in the nightcap Monday to
help the Williams College softball team to a 5-3 victory and a
split of its doubleheader with Springfield College at Cole Field.
With the win in the second game, the Ephs evened their record at
14-14 overall. They are at Keene State for a twinbill Wednesday
beginning at 4 p.m. The Pride moved to 17-13 on the season with the
split.
Williams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game
two. With two outs, Katie Powers worked a walk off Springfield
starter Katie Anderson. Copeland-Halperin followed with a home run
to straightaway center field.
That combo was at it again in the third for the Ephs. This time,
Powers drew a lead-off walk from Anderson. Copeland-Halperin then
followed with a long home run to left-center field for a 4-0
Williams lead.
The Ephs added another run in the fourth when Joey Lye, who
extended her consecutive times reaching base streak to 13 before
flying out in the first game, singled and scored on a double by
Powers.
Williams starter Margaret Ryan held the Pride hitless threw 3
2/3 innings but was removed because of a pitch count after walking
two batters in the top of the fourth. First-year Mary Beth Daub
worked out of the jam with a strike out.
Springfield got on the board in the fifth when Angela Atkins
crushed a solo home run to left field off Daub. A two-run double by
Amanda Novak in the sixth got the Pride within two runs, but
Williams senior Morgan Simpson came on in the seventh to close the
door and earn a save.
Copeland-Halperin was 3 for 3 with four RBI and two runs scored
in the win. Lye was 2 for 4 and Caitlyn Cain went 2 for 3.
Springfield took the opener 4-2, scoring twice in the top of the
seventh to snap a 2-2 tie. Michelle Wlosek's RBI-single brought the
go-ahead run home and Jamie Moran added an insurance run with an
RBI-single to center.
Pride hurler Samantha Rhodes earned the victory, scattering 10
hits over seven innings while walking one and striking out three.
Wlosek went 3 for 4 at the plate, while Denise Fumicello was 2 for
3 with one RBI and Moran 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Lye was 3 for 4 for the Ephs, while Becky Sansone was 2 for 4
and Simpson 2 for 3 with an RBI. Daub took the loss for Williams.
