WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Junior Morgan Simpson fired a
complete-game five-hitter and Becky Sansone smacked a two-run home
run Friday as the Williams College softball team picked up a 4-1
win over NESCAC West foe Middlebury.
The Ephs improved to 16-15 on the season, 5-2 in the NESCAC
West. Middlebury slipped to 10-14 overall, 1-5 in the division. The
two teams play again Saturday in a twinbill beginning at noon in
Williamstown.
Simpson carried a shutout into the seventh Friday. losing it on
a bases-loaded groundout. But she induced a grounder to short to
end the contest. Simpson allowed just five hits and did not walk a
batter while striking out five.
Her teammates gave her a 1-0 lead in the first. With two outs,
senior Katie Powers roped a double off the fence in left. After a
chage of bats mid-plate appearance, Eph junior Libby
Copeland-Halperin lined an RBI-single to left.
Williams added three in the third off Panther starter Geene
Constantin. Joey Lye walked and Sansone followed with a long drive
to center field that cleared the fence for a two-run home run.
Copeland-Halperin and Simpson followed an out with back-to-back
singles, and senior Taryn Goodman scored the third run with a
groundout for a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers threatend to make it a game in the seventh. Megan
Margel led off with a single. Constantin singled. After an out, an
error loaded the bases. Amelia Magistrali scored a run with a
groundout to third, but Lye went into the shortstop hole to field a
grounder off the bat of Brittany Burke, and her throw just nipped
the runner to end the game.
Lye was 2 for 2 with a run scored for Williams.
Copeland-Halperin and Simpson were both 2 for 3. Constantin took
the loss for Middlebury, allowing eight hits and four runs, all
earned, over four innings. She walked one and fanned two.
