WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Junior Morgan Simpson roped a one-out double
to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to
score Katie Powers with the winning run and give the Williams
College softball team a 4-3, Game 2 victory and a split of a
doubleheader with Middlebury.
Williams moved to 17-16 overall with the game two win after
losing the first game, 6-2. They also improved to 6-3 in the NESCAC
West Division. Middlebury fell to 11-15 overall.
Powers opened the seventh with a walk from Middlebury starter
Ali McAnaney. She moved to second on a groundout and slid home with
the game-winner when Simpson's blast to center just eluded Panther
centerfielder Nellie Wood.
Simpson's blast made a winner of ... herself. She came on in
relief of Margaret Ryan and threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing three
hits and one unearned run while walking no one and striking out
two.
The Panthers had tied the game in the sixth after trailing 3-0
early. Megan Margel led off with a sinking liner that went for a
single and advanced to second on an error on the play. She moved to
third on a wild pitch and scored when Emily Burbridge grounded a
single through the shortstop hole.
The Ephs jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and
one in the second. In the first, Libby Copeland-Halperin had an
RBI-groundout that scored Joey Lye, who had singled leading off the
frame. Two batters later, senior Taryn Goodman grounded a single
through the right side to score Powers.
Ryan went the first 4 1/3 for the Ephs, allowing two hits and
two run, both earned, while walking two and striking out one.
McAnaney took the loss, giving up nine hits and four runs, only two
earned, over 6 1/3 innings. She walked one and fanned one.
Lye was 3 for 4 for Williams. Goodman was 2 for 3 with an RBI
and Simpson 2 for 4 with an RBI. Burbridge was 2 for 3 for the
Panthers with an RBI.
In the opener, Middlebury erased a 2-0 Williams lead with a run
in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth for the 6-2
victory. Brittany Burke went the distance for the Panthers,
allowing eight hits over seven innings while walking three and
striking out one.
Middlebury took the lead in the fifth on Margel's sacrifice fly
to left. The Panthers put the game away in the sixth when Kristin
Maletsky -- the first batter Simpson faced when she came on in
relief of Mary Beth Daub -- rocketed a three-run home run to left
field.
Burbridge was 2 for 3 for the Panthers, while Carlie Crawford
went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
