WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Katie Powers and Caitlyn Cain had
clutch two-run hits Wednesday to help the Williams College softball
team rally past RPI, 6-4, at Cole Field. The second game of the
twinbill was cancelled due to lightning and will not be made up.
The Ephs improved to 18-16 with the win. They host archrival
Amherst Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the final home game of the season.
The Red Hawks fell to 23-8.
RPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Alysa
Rochminski followed a Courtney Sweeney single with a two-run homer
to left field. Williams rallied for three runs in the bottom of the
fourth to take a one-run lead.
Becky Sansone triggered the outburst by drawing a lead-off walk
from RPI starter Michelle Street. After an out, Libby
Copeland-Halperin grounded a single to left. Senior Taryn Goodman
followed with a line drive RBI-single to left. A wild pitch moved
both runners up and Cain then ripped a single up the middle to
score both runners.
Williams added three runs to its lead in the fourth. Two walks
sandwiched around a Joey Lye single loaded the bases with no outs.
Powers came up and stroked a line drive into the left-center field
gap to score two. An error allowed Sansone to score the sixth run.
The Red Hawks rallied in the sixth when Becky Bailey walked and
scored when Julianne Bass crushed a home run to left-center field.
But that would be the only hit Eph reliever Emily Fowler-Cornfeld
would allow. She retired the side in order to close out the game in
the seventh and earn a save. In three innings, she allowed one hit,
one walk and struck out six.
Eph first-year Mary Beth Daub picked up the win, allowing two
hits and two runs over while walking two and striking out three in
four innings of work. Street took the loss, giving up five hits and
three walks over 4 1/3 innings. She was charged with six runs, five
earned.
