WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. -- Wesleyan University played spoiler to the
Williams College softball team's home opener Saturday, banging out
13 hits in a 12-4, six-inning game on Cole Field.
The Cardinals improved to 10-10 overall, 4-0 in the conference
while Williams dropped to 9-10, 0-1. The two teams meet again
Sunday for a twinbill that begins at 11 a.m.
Wesleyan third sacker Marcia Whitehead went 3 for 4 with three
RBI and two runs scored in the game, while teammate Molly O'Connell
was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Meaghan Dendy had two hits and scored
three runs while also throwing a complete-game and earning the
victory.
Wesleyan scored three runs in each of the first three innings to
build a 9-3 lead. In the first, Joanna Brownson's RBI-double off
the left-field wall drove in the third and final run. In the
second, Whitehead had a two-run line drive single to center. Dendy
and Whitehead had RBI-singles in the third.
Williams had the aforementioned nine hits. Morgan Simpson was 2
for 3 for the purple and gold while Joey Lye went 2 for 4 with a
RBI and a run scored.
Trailing 6-2, the Ephs appeared ready to take control of the
game in the bottom of the second when Taryn Goodman, Caitlyn Cain
and Lye opened the frame with back to back singles that scored one
run and left runners on second and third.
Dendy stepped up her game, however, as she got Becky Sansone to
ground out to third, fanned Katie Powers and stopped the rally by
getting Libby Copeland-Halperin to ground out to first. Dendy's
line looked like this: Six innings pitched, nine hits, two earned
runs, one walk and one strikeout.
Margaret Ryan started and took the loss for the Ephs, going 2
1/3 innings ad giving up eight hits and nine runs, of which only
four were earned. She walked two and did not strike out a batter.
