WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - For the first time in the
last five matches 3rd-ranked Williams did not play in a
match that ended 5-4, but the Ephs were tested by
23rd-ranked Middlebury this afternoon in notching a 7-2
win.
Williams swept the doubles matches to get off on the right foot,
but Middlebury contested every point in singles play. "It was an
extremely hard fought 7-2 win," noted Eph head coach Alison Swain.
"We fought for every point we won. In doubles we took the offensive
right from the start and it was fantastic to go up 3-0."
Having played four consecutive matches ending 5-4 and winning
the last three in a row gave the Ephs the toughness and the
confidence needed to turn back upset minded Middlebury in a match
that lasted just under four and a half hours.
Eph singles wins came from Grace Baljon (2), Ashley Parsons (3)
Allie Rottkamp (5) and Annie Hancock (6). Middlebury wins came from
Claire Smyser at one and Clare Burke at number four. Three of the
six singles encounters went three sets.
"It's great to be 2-0 in NESCAC and we're looking forward to
playing Wesleyan on Saturday," said Swain.
With the victory the Ephs improved their record to 11-2 overall
and 2-0 in NESCAC, while Middlebury is now 7-3 overall and 1-2 in
NESCAC.
The Ephs will host Little Three and NAESCAC foe Wesleyan at
11:00 am Saturday.
