NORTHAMPTON, MA -- The Williams College softball team suffered
two difficult losses Wednesday when it dropped 6-5 and 3-2
decisions to Smith College.
The Ephs fell to 10-13 overall. They are at Hamilton Friday for
a 5 p.m. contest.
"We focused on improving our defense today and we accomplished
that," Williams head coach Kris Herman said. "We're just not
getting all three pieces (hitting, pitching, defense) working at
the same time."
The opener was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Ephs leave
the tying and winning runs on second and third in the top of the
seventh inning. Williams senior Taryn Goodman hit a solo home run
leading off the fourth that put the Ephs up, 3-2.
The Pioneers, who improved to 8-14 overall, scored twice in the
fifth and sixth to take a 6-3 lead. The Ephs would not go quietly,
however, as a two-out Goodman double in the seventh put runners on
second and third. Sophomore Stephanie Brooks came through with a
key pinch-hit, RBI-single, and Caitlyn Cain followed with an
run-scoring double that made it 6-5, but a groundout ended the
game.
Goodman finished 3 for 4 with a home run and a double.
"Taryn has had a great season," Herman said. "She's really
gotten the best out of herself and I'm so proud of her."
Senior Margaret Ryan started for the Ephs, going 2-plus frames
and allowing four hits and two walks while stirking out two. She
was charged with two runs. First-year Mary Beth Daub tossed the
final four frames and allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits.
She walked one and struck out two.
In the nightcap, Williams trailed 2-0 after three but scored
single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie things up. Smith
scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth, and the umpires
called the game because of darkness after five innings.
Joey Lye went 2 for 3 with a runs scored and a stolen base.
Morgan Simpson went 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored.
Cain started and took the loss for the Ephs, allowing 10 hits
and three runs, all earned, over 4 1/3 innings. She did not walk a
better nor strike out a batter.
