WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- It was over before it started. The Williams
College men's basketball team returned home in style
following the holiday break, opening its game against The
City College of New York with 25 consecutive points en route to a
94-47 victory at the Chandler Gymnasium.
Williams junior Blake Schultz led the Ephs with 16 points in 16
minutes of action and six other Ephs netted seven points or more in
the victory.
Williams improved to 8-3 and will face Kean (N.J.) University in
the championship game of the Purple & Gold Invitational
Saturday at 3 p.m. Kean defeated RPI, 72-54, in the night's first
game. CCNY, which fell to 0-11, will play RPI in the consolation
game Saturday at 1 p.m.
The game opened in nightmarish fashion for the Beavers as
Williams hit seven consecutive three-pointers to build a 21-0 lead.
In contrast, CCNY missed its first eight shots of the game and
turned the ball over five times.
The Ephs have been scoring thus far by taking what their
opponents' defense gives them and in the opening minutes Friday,
that was three-pointers. Michael Kearney, Harlan Dodson and Schultz
each hit two treys in the game's first five minutes.
Wiliams led 25-0 following lay-ups by William Hardy and Ethan
Timmons-Schiffman, but the Beavers finally broke through after 8:42
of scoreless basketball when Daniel Colon drove to the basket for a
lay-up.
In the half, the Ephs shot 60.7 percent (17 of 28) from the
floor, and 66.7 percent (10 of 15) from beyond the arc. Schultz
scored 13 points on a spotless 5 of 5 shooting, 3 of 3 from the
three-point arc.
Williams outrebounded the Beavers, 22-8, over the opening 20
minutes, and CCNY shot jjust 29. 6 percent (8 of 27) from the floor
en route to a 47-19 halftime deficit.
The Ephs picked up where they left off in the opening minute of
the second half as Kevin Snyder and Schultz buried shots from
beyond the three-point arc to boost their lead to 53-19.
Colon was the bright spot for CCNY, finishing with a game-high
20 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the floor.
Snyder finished with eight points and six assists for Williams,
while Timmons-Schiffman notched nine points and four rebounds. Joe
Geoghegan returned from an injury that forced him to miss nine of
the first 10 games and scored seven points while grabbing a
team-high nine rebounds.
