HARTFORD, CT - Williams' junior netminder Sara Plunkett led the
Ephs into the win column in this afternoon's action in Hartford, as
she denied 29 Trinity shots to pick up her third shut out on the
year, earning her team their sixth victory by a score of 4-0 over
the Bantams. The Ephs improve to 6-8-1 and are winners in five of
their last six games. Trinity, who began the season about as good
as any team can with a 7-0-2 start, have dropped their last five
games.
"Sara played another huge game for us," said her head coach
Shannon Bryant. "We also played a very nice game on the penalty
kill and our aggressive attitude led to good scoring chances on
their end."
Some of those scoring chances were converted into Williams goals
in the second period, as freshman forward Kristen Tubbs (her 5th)
and junior defenseman Kait O'Brien (her 7th) both netted
short-handed goals for the Ephs at 4:52 and 11:28 respectively.
Tubbs forced a turnover at the point, resulting in an unassisted
breakaway score, while O'Brien was set-up by freshman Sarah Herr on
an odd-man rush. Herr also assisted the first Eph goal of the
contest which came at even strength early in the opening period,
when captain and senior defenseman Joey Lye put in the game-winner
off a bad angle shot that squeezed by Trinity goalie Isabel Iwachiw
for her 5th of the year. Junior forward Tracy Ferriter added her
team-leading 9th goal late in the third period to put the game out
of reach.
Williams was able to register four goals on just fourteen shots,
a credit to both their patience on offense and confidence in their
defensive game.
"This was a very fast tempo battle and their were plenty of
really good chances for both teams," concluded Bryant. "We played a
solid sixty minutes, and we're looking forward to taking these guys
on in tomorrow's game."
The puck will drop at the Williams Rink in Hartford at 12:30pm
for game two of this conference double-header.
