Ephmen second after Day 1 of NESCACs

MIDDLETOWN, CT-  The Williams College men's swimming and diving team ended Day 1 of the NESCAC championships 66 points behind first place Tufts University.  The Ephs, winners of six consecutive league titles, won two individual event championships on the day.

"We had a bit of a bumpy first day," said head coach Steve Kuster.  "We had some bad breaks early in terms of false starts and we now have to regroup with some strong swims the next two days."

The two top performances for the Ephs produced NESCAC record times, as senior Norman Scott won the 50 yard butterfly (21.97), and seniors Tyler Bonewell, Tim Ryan, and Scott, as well as sophomore Werth McDonald, swam the top time in the 400 yard medley relay (3:22.10).

Bonewell also contributed important points for the Ephs as he placed second in the 50 yard breaststroke.  Fellow senior Thatcher Heumann provided the Eph's other second place finish in the 200 yard IM (1:54.68), while sophomore Gary Roberson qualified for nationals with his third best time in the 500 yard freestyle (4:31.21).

"We ended the day strong in the 400 yard Medley relay, and hopefully that energizes our guys and gives us a boost going into tomorrow," said Kuster.

The Ephs continue NESCAC action tomorrow as Day 2 starts at 10 AM with the preliminary races, and continues at 6 PM with the finals.
