WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Williams Men's Swim and Dive dominated today against Tufts, Trinity and WPI. Fantastic energy coupled with strong performances in the pool and on the boards helped the men sweep today's competition.
To kick off the meet, the Ephs won the 200 medley relay.
Ryan Nunez led off with a blazing backstroke split, followed by an impressive 25.91 from
Michael Grover, a 22.64 from
Harrison Williams and a 20.93 from
Theo Randall. The B team took 3rd to Tufts, highlighted by an exceptional last 50 from
Mason Green. Green put his head down and closed the gap to the lane next to him, securing the 3rd place finish.
Vincent Kim, the distance specialist, took 1st in the 1000. His time was faster than last week, comfortably getting under 10 minutes in a 9:56.39. Kim commanded the race from start to finish. Fellow first-year
Bob Frazer swam the 200 freestyle after, posting an outstanding 1:43.46. That time won the event by 2 seconds. Frazer went out very fast in the first 100, but was able to hang on.
The 100 backstroke was won by Tufts, however
Gabe Lee,
Whitman Horton and
Aidan Lee took 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The depth on the Williams team was crucial in the success today. Senior
Michael Grover took 1st in the 100 breaststroke after, with an impressive sub :59 second swim, touching in 58.78. He was joined by
Hugh Henry in 2nd and
Kevin Jiang in 3rd.
The 200 butterfly saw the duo of
Ryan Nunez and
Alex Gertner once again. This time, Gertner just out-touched Nunez by .19. Both swam 6 seconds faster than the third place finisher.
Randall captured the 50 freestyle once again, finding a way to get his hand on the wall. Green was just a tenth behind touching third in a 21.50. In such a tight margin race, the two swam exceptionally well. In the 100, Randall placed 2nd to Tufts.
Harrison Williams and
Kevin Whitworth were just behind.
Gabe Lee tied Tufts for first place in the 200 backstroke. His time of 1:54.17 was composed by an opening 100 in 55.44 and a closing 100 in 58.73. In the 200 breaststroke,
Hugh Henry and
Kevin Jiang went 2-3 with a 2:10.78 and a 2:11.77 respectively.
The 500 was captured by
Ryan Nunez, who claimed the event by over 5 seconds. Following Nunez was Nye Hanan, who also had a great swim touching in 4:49.48. The 100 butterfly was claimed by Tufts in the 1-2 spots.
Alex Gertner took 3rd, and
Bob Frazer was just behind him in 4th. The first-year butterfly duo swam great races amidst the tight competition.
On the boards,
Calder Biondi did what he does best. He placed 1st on both, continuing to set himself up well for competition in the NESCAC and NCAA. These performances have locked him in for regionals.
The 400 IM was captured by
Vincent Kim. Following his performance in the 1000, Kim utilized his endurance training to claim gold. After this event was the 200 freestyle relay. Williams got beat by Tufts in the end, however, Green, Randall and Nunez all brought it home under 21 seconds in a 20.95, 20.87 and 20.70 respectively.
To follow up the performance today, Captain
Gabe Lee had a few remarks, "We had a tough opponent coming into this weekend and emerged victorious. I'm very proud of the fire this team has, and I'm excited to keep the ball rolling."
The Eph men will keep the ball rolling at the invitational in a couple of weeks before dual meet season continues in January.
