Women's Hockey drops fourth straight to Norwich, 4-2

Box score

NORTHFIELD, VT -- The women's hockey team squared off against an incredibly hot Norwich squad this evening at the Kreitzberg Arena, and despite battling back in the second period to knot the contest at two, the Cadets overwhelmed Williams in the final twenty minutes, and took the game 4-2 for their ninth straight victory.  Norwich improves to a 13-7-1 overall record, while the Ephs now stand at 6-12-1.

The Cadets opened the scoring in the first period in 4-on-4 action, when sophomore forward Brittane Michaud netted her 2nd of the year at 16:59.  The next score wouldn't come until the second half of the middle frame, as freshman forward Julie Fortier registered her 12th of the season at 12:53 to make it a 2-0 Norwich lead.  Both goals were marked unassisted.

Williams responded less than two minutes later with a crisp feed from junior forward Tracey Ferriter to the stick of freshman forward Hannah Systrom, who finished the play for her 2nd on the year.  The score gave Ferriter her team-leading 20th point, as well as a 7th assist to sophomore defenseman Lauren Zurek.  Just over three minutes later, the Ephs capitalized on a power-play chance, courtesy of a shot from freshman defenseman Sarah Herr with help from seniors Sam Tarnasky and Mallory Green.  The tying goal was Herr's 2nd this season.

The third period was dominated by the Cadets, starting with sophomore forward Kelsey Cone's game-winning goal at 8:57, with assists from junior forward Sophie Leclerc and sophomore forward Sarah Scardino.  Leclerc would later put the game away with a power-play goal with less than three minutes left, aided by freshman defenseman Amanda Wilks and freshman forward Melissa Rundlett.  It was Cone's 12th and Leclerc's 14th of the season.

The Cadets outshot the Ephs 16-5 in the final period and 28-19 in the game.  Eph netminder Sara Plunkett made 24 saves while Norwich's Cindy Fortin stopped 17 for the win.

Williams next opponent will be conference juggernaut Middlebury, who the Ephs lost to in their opener 5-1.  The puck will drop this Wednesday night at 7:00pm in Middlebury, Vermont at the Kenyon Arena.
