MEDFORD -- First-year Margie Fulton came off the bench to score
five goals with an assist, and junior Tina Nawrocki added four
goals and two assists, as the unranked Williams College women's
lacrosse team defeated #7 Tufts University, 15-13, in a NESCAC game
on Bello Field Saturday afternoon.
The visiting Ephs scored on six of 10 free-position opportunities
and got 13 saves from sophomore goalie Julia Schreiber while
improving to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in NESCAC. The Ephs are off until
March 28th, when they host conference for Trinity at 12 p.m.
"This was great, a very exciting win for the team," Ephs head
coach Chris Mason said. "Our confidence level continues to grow and
grow."
Sophomore Amanda Roberts scored five goals to lead Tufts, which
lost for the first time this season (4-1, 2-1 NESCAC).
Williams rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take an 8-6 lead by
halftime. The Jumbos rallied and led 11-10 when Maggie Casey scored
with 14:07 remaining in the game. Williams responded with four
consecutive goals — three in a one minute, 57 second span
— to take control.
Tina Nawrocki got the ball rolling by scoring on a free position
shot with 13:28 left to tie the game at 11. She followed that with
a goal off an assist from Fulton with 11:56 remaining. Only 25
seconds later, Whitney Thayer scored off an assist from Tina
Nawrocki for a 13-11 lead. Fulton made it 14:11 at the 8:46 mark
off an assist from Britt Spackman, who had two goals and three
assists in the victory.
"I felt in the first half we started off nervous, fell behind
and started trying to catch up too quickly, which led to several
turnovers," Mason said. "We were rushing when we didn't half to. We
needed to show more poise and find the open player on the open side
of the field. When we fell behind in the second half, we had
already started doing that, so there was no panic. We waited for a
good shot and converted it. We used a lot more patience."
The Jumbos had a 4-1 lead halfway into the first period, with
junior Emily Johnson scoring twice. The Ephs scored three of the
next four goals, including Nawrocki's second of the game at 5:40 to
make it 5-4 Tufts. An unassisted tally by senior Courtney Thomas
got one back for the Jumbos, but Williams finished with four
straight goals to end the half leading 8-6. Three of the goals came
with Tufts starting goalkeeper Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) off the
field due to a yellow card. Fulton scored twice during the Williams
run.
Tufts battled back by out-scoring Williams 5-2 in the first 16
minutes of the second half. Roberts scored twice during this span
and gave Tufts a 10-9 lead at 17:58. Senior tri-captain Britt
Spackman (Newton, MA) tied it at 10 for Williams.
Thayer finished with three goals and two assists for Williams.
Nawrocki controlled five draws and caused three turnovers for the
Ephs, while senior tri-captain Lizzie Burns led them with five
ground balls.
