ANAHEIM, CA — Sophomore Mary Beth Daub hurled five shut
out innings Friday while her teammates backed her with a 16-hit
attack that produced a 12-0 five-inning, mercy-rule victory over
NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury at Peralta Park.
The win improved Williams record to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the
conference. The Ephs and Panthers will play a doubleheader Saturday
at Pomona Pitzer College beginning at 12 p.m. PST.
"We wanted to come out and raise the bar high," Williams head
coach Kris Herman said. "We were able to do that. We had some great
at-bats today with two outs and two strikes too, and Mary Beth
pitched a great game. It was just a complete team effort."
Williams took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Joey Lye
reached on an error and stole second base, scoring on Morgan
Simpson's RBI-single. The Ephs broke open the game with a seven-run
second inning that featured nine hits.
Emily Fowler-Cornfeld opened the inning with a single, and after
an out, the Ephs put together six consecutive base knocks, the
capper coming from Simpson, who launched a three-run home run to
left field.
Simpson finished her day 3 for 3 with four RBI ad two runs
scored. Fowler-Cornfeld also went 3 for 3 with an RBI ad run
scored. Senior Becky Sansone went 2 for 3 with three RBI, including
a two-run double in a three-run fifth inning. Jess Cross was 2 for
3 with a run scored, and Lye went 2 for 4 with three runs scored
and three stolen bases.
Daub allowed just three hits over her five innings of work,
walking one and striking out seven Middlebury batters.
