WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Caitlin Irvine's
fourth goal of the game snapped a tie with 7:02 remaining Saturday
and helped Trinity College post a 14-13 conference win over host
Williams at Renzie Lamb Field.
Trinity improved to 6-1 overall, 3-1 in the NESCAC, while
Williams dropped to 4-2, 2-2 in the conference. The Ephs host Union
Sunday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference game.
"We wasted the first half," Ephs head coach Chris Mason said.
"We were not available for each other to move the ball and that led
to too many turnovers in the middle of the field. We did not
possess the ball enough, that's what hurt us. Once we started
moving the ball better in the second half, our play improved."
Williams trailed by as much as six goals twice in the game, the
final time with 22:52 remaining after the Bantams' Jennifer Calver
scored off a feed from Rachel Romanowsky. But the Ephs would score
seven of the game's next eight goals to tie the score at 12 when
senior Britt Spackman fired a shot past Bantam goalie Gina Dinallo
with 8:47 to go.
Trinity was the fllowing draw control and Irvine was awarded a
free position shot she converted. The Bantams Lauren Peck added an
important insurance goal with 3:24 remaining and an Eph off the
field due to a yellow card infraction.
Williams Whitney Thayer scored with 1:49 left to make things
interesting at 14-13, and the Ephs had one possession to tie it,
but Trinity defender Jesse Schultz created a turnover before a shot
was taken.
Trinity came out of the gates on fire, scoring six times in the
first 16 minutes to build a 6-1 lead. Calver scored twice in the
early going, once right off the draw and the other off a rebound
opportunity after the initial save was made by Eph keeper Julia
Schreiber.
The Bantams led at the half 9-4. Romanowsky had four goals and
three assists in the victory, and three of the scores came in the
opening 30 minutes. Irvine finished with four goals and one assist,
while Calver had three goals and an assist.
Trinity outshot Williams 36-26 in the game. Dinallo made 10
saves in net for the Bantams.
Julia Nawrocki and Whitney Thayer each had three goals and one
assists for the Ephs. Spackman had two goals and two assists, while
first-years Margie Fulton and Taylor Fleishhacker each scored
twice. Schreiber finished with 17 saves, 12 in the second half.
