WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Williams defenders
Antonia Clark and Lizzie Burns created a key turnover in the final
minute of play Sunday to allow the Williams College women's
lacrosse team to stave off a furious Union rally and post a 9-7
non-conference victory at Renzie Lamb Field.
The Ephs improved to 5-2 with the win, while Union slipped to
2-2. Williams hosts conference rival Connecticut College Wednesday
at 4:30 p.m.
Williams had taken a 3-2 halftime lead and built that to an 8-4
advantage with eight minutes to play, but the visiting Dutchwomen
scored three consecutive goals in a one minute, 53-second span.
Kellin Skurek's goal off an assist from Melissa Hine with 5:51
remaining made it an 8-7 game.
Union had one last chance to tie in the final minue, but Clark
and Burns surrounded a Union attack and forced the ball loose. A
quick pick-up of the groundball by Quinn Bruggemann led to
first-year Margie Fulton's third goal of the game with 32 seconds
remaining.
Union's Allie Cuozzo scored in the first minute of the game,
flying out from behind the Williams goal and firing a shot past Eph
goalie Julia Schreiber. But Williams was able to possess the ball
much of the half and scored three straight goals, one each from
Alice Nelson, Britt Spackman and Tracey Ferriter, to build a
two-goal lead.
The Dutchwomen's second goal came with only 6.1 seconds left in
the first half, courtesy of Hine, but it gave them momentum
entering the halftime break down just one.
However, it was the Ephs who struck first in the second half, as
Spackman fired a shot past Union keeper Cat Ruggiero. Anne Marie
Burke then took a pass from Julia Nawrocki and flipped a quick shot
into the net for a 5-2 lead just 1:42 into the half.
Union pressed closer with goals by Kristin Joyce and Cuozzo that
made it 5-4, but after a timeout, the Ephs regained their
composure. Fulton scored her first goal of the game with 17:47
left, batting in a rebound from in front of the Union goal.
First-year Taylor Fleishhacker then scored off a Spackman assist
and Fulton scored again, also from Spackman, to make it 8-4 with
11:31 to go.
The Ephs outshot Union, 30-21, in the game, and held a 27-22
advantage in groundballs. Fulton had three goals and an assist for
Williams while Spackman finished with two goals and three assists.
Hine had two goals and two assists for Union, and Cuozzo scored
twice.
Ruggiero made 12 saves for Union, Schreiber had seven for
Williams.
