ORANGE, CA. — The Williams College softball team suffered
its first two-loss day out West Monday as Chapman University
delivered a 6-3, 10-2 sweep. The Ephs slipped to 4-5 on their trip.
Tuesday, Williams is at Claremont Mudd Scripps. They play host
Claremont at 3 p.m. PST and then La Verne University at 8 p.m.
Monday, the host Panthers broke open the first game with a
four-run fourth inning and led 5-0 before the Ephs mounted a
comeback, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh before
bowing out.
In the sixth, Morgan Simpson lined a one-out single. Emily
Fowler-Cornfeld followed with a single and a walk loaded the bases.
After a force out at home, Carly Ameen's blooper was dropped for a
two-run error.
In the seventh, Joey Lye singled and with two outs, scored on a
Simpson double. Lye finished 4 for 4 with a run scored. Simpson had
two hits and an RBI.
Sophomore Mary Beth Daub was tagged with her first loss of the
season, allowing seven hits and six runs while walking five and
striking out three over 5 2/3 innings. Fowler-Cornfeld came on with
two outs and two runners on in the sixth and retired the only
batter she faced.
In the nightcap, Williams took a 1-0 lead in the first, but
Chapman answered with five in the second and one each in the third
and fourth to build a 7-2 lead. The game ended when the Panthers
plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Simpson took the loss for Williams, allowing seven hits and
seven runs while walking three and striking out no one over 3 2/3
innings. Fowler-Cornfeld finished up, throwing two frames and
giving up five hits and three runs. She walked one and struck out
one.
Caitlyn Cain, Becky Sansone and Jess Cross had two hits each for
the Ephs. Sansone scored a run, while Cross had a stolen base and
an RBI.
