Ephs drop two in California

CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Williams College softball team found the going tough Tuesday, dropping two games to two different teams. The Ephs fell 7-1 to Claremont Mudd Scripps, and then fell 9-1 in six inning to the University if La Verne.

Williams fell to 4-7 overall. The Ephs are off Wednesday and they play the University of Redlands Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. before heading back East.

"Today was better than yesterday, but we still played poorly. We didn't pitch well, we didn't field well and we were snakebit offensively," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "When you don't have all three of those facets, you're going to lose."

In Tuesday's first game, Claremont used a five-run bottom of the fourth to break open a 2-1 game. The hosts had scored two in the bottom of the second off Williams starter Caitlyn Cain,  but Williams answered with a single run in the top of the third when Joey Lye singled, stole second and scored on an RBI-double by Cain.

But Claremont's big fourth -- highlighted by a pinch-hit, three-run double by Emily Coleman, was too much for Williams to overcome. Cain took the loss, allowing five hits and five runs while walking three and striking out two over 3 1/3 innings.

Jess Cross went 2 for 2 for Williams. Lye was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Cain was 1 for 3 with one RBI. Emily Fowler-Cornfeld and Oriana Mcgee were both 1 for 3.

In the nightcap, the Ephs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Lye singled and scored on a single by Becky Sansone. La Verne answered with a run in its half of the first to tie the game at one.

After the Ephs left the bases loaded in the top of the second, La Verne scored the go-ahead run in its half. They broke open the game with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, helped by four Eph errors in the frame.

Williams left seven runners stranded in the game. The Ephs had three hits, one each by Lye, Sansone and Carly Ameen.

Emily Fowler-Cornfeld got the loss for the Ephs, going three-plus innings and allowing five runs.
