MIDDLEBURY,
VT. – Top-ranked Williams (11-0, 3-0) continued their
dominance on the courts, defeating #15 Middlebury (8-7), 7-2. The Ephs picked up their
second straight NESCAC win, and their seventh straight victory over
a nationally-ranked opponent.
The Ephs took a 2-1 edge out of doubles
play. Grace Baljon
and Taylor French were victorious over Middlebury's Anne and
Clare Burke, 8-3. The
other matches ended in 8-5 results, with the Panthers taking the
point at court one and Williams winning at court three.
Although the home team played well in doubles,
Williams had too much firepower in singles play. All five singles wins came in
straight sets. Baljon
cruised through her match at court one, while Annie Hancock did not
relinquish a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 showing at court six over
Whitney Hanson.
Nikki Reich was engaged in a first set
tiebreak with Elizabeth Stone, but the sophomore responded to the
pressure and dominated the breaker, 7-2, to take the match in two
sets. Alotta played a
perfect second set in a 6-4, 6-0 result at court five, while Ashley
Parsons took a late break in the second set for a win. Cary Gibson came out strong in
the first set, before falling in three sets at court two.
“There were times in almost every match
where we were down in games or sets,” said Williams'
head coach Alison Swain. “We were able to come back and proud
of the team for that”.
Williams will host rival Amherst this Saturday
at 11:00 a.m.
