WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — The Williams College softball team rallied for nine runs in its final two at-bats Friday to post a 9-2 victory over conference rival Hamilton at Cole Field.

The Ephs improved to 9-12 on the season, 4-3 in conference play, while Hamilton dropped to 5-19 overall, 1-5 in the NESCAC. The two teams will play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.

Williams senior Joey Lye was 3 for 4 in the win, setting a new school record for hits in the process. Her total of 187 surpasses 1999 graduate Laura Jacobs, who held the record of 185. Lye already set a new school record for career stolen bases this season.

Hamilton took an early lead Friday when starter Megan Coughlin line a home run to left center field with two outs in the bottom of the second. The Continentals added a fourth-inning run on an RBI-single by Leigh Sherrow.

Coughlin kept Williams off the board for four innings, getting plenty of help from her defense, which turned three double plays.

But the Ephs took advantage of three Hamilton errors in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Allison Hart led off the frame by reaching on an error. Carly Ameen lined a single to left, and Oriana Mcgee reached on a fielder's choice that erased Hart. After Lye reached on a fielder's choice, Caitlyn Cain's two out grounder was misplayed. The throw home hit Mcgee, allowing her and Lye to score and Cain to advance to third. A wild pitch scored Cain with the go-ahead run.

The Ephs put the game away with a six-run bottom of the sixth. Lye smacked an RBI-single to left, Becky Sansone had an RBI-single and Morgan Simpson singled up the middle to score two more runs.

Simpson earned the win for the Ephs, allowing five hits and two runs while walking no one and striking out six. Coughlin took the loss for Hamilton, giving up 13 hits over six innings. She did not walk a batter nor strike one out. Only four on the nine runs she allowed were earned.

Kathryn Kroleski was 2 for 3 for the visitors. Sansone was 3 for 4 and Simpson 2 for 4 for Williams.
