SPRINGFIELD, MA — Sophomore Caitlyn Cain was 2 for 4 with
4 RBI and senior Joey Lye set another all-time Williams record
Monday when the Ephs rallied for a 6-3 win over Springfield in the
nightcap of a doubleheader.
Springfield defeated Williams 9-6 in the first game. The split
left the Ephs with a 12-13 overall heading into a twinbill at RPI
Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m.
Lye went 4 for 8 in the doubleheader, setting a new record for
career total bases by upping her total to 255, one more than the
previous record holder, 2006 graduate Alana Frost. It's the third
all-time school record set by Lye in the previous week, following
stolen bases and hits.
Williams trailed the Pride 3-0 after two innings of the second
game, but rallied for three runs in the third and three more in the
fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Senior Morgan Simpson made that lead
stand up, shutting out the Pride over the final four innings to
earn the win.
Carly Ameen ignited the third-inning rally with a lead-off walk
against Pride starter Katie Anderson. With one out, Lye rapped a
single to right field and stole second moments later. Cain then
ripped a two-run single that left the Ephs down by one. She would
score on a two-out single to center by Simpson.
In the fourth, Libby Copeland-Halperin led off with a double.
Allison Hart reached on an error. The Ephs then tried a double
steal, but Copeland-Halperin was thrown out at the dish. Ameen
walked, and then Oriana Mcgee reached on a fielder's choice which
loaded the bases. Lye's liner to left was dropped for a run-scoring
error that put the Ephs up 4-3, and Cain capped the frame by lacing
her second two-run single.
Simpson earned the win, allowing five hits and two walks while
striking out four. She was 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI. The
game was called due to darkness after the sixth.
In the opener, Williams led 4-2 entering the bottom of the
fifth, but the Pride struck for six runs to take an 8-4 lead.
Simpson's solo home run in the fourth tied the game at two, and
Becky Sansone's two-run homer in the fifth put the Ephs up by two.
Simpson finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI while Sansone and
Lye were each 2 for 4. Cain took the loss, allowing 15 hits and 9
runs over five-plus innings.
