TROY, N.Y. – Senior Becky Sansone's two-run single sparked
a four-run top of the seventh inning in the first game Tuesday as
the Williams College softball team split a doubleheader with
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at Doris Robison Field,
winning game one 7-4 and losing the nightcap, 11-7.
With the split, the Ephs move to 13-14 on the season heading
into a key three-game series this weekend with archrival Amherst.
Williams is at Amherst Friday at 4:30 p.m. before hosting a
doubleheader with the Jeffs Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
"We hit the ball well today, we rallied in both games," Ephs
head coach Kris Herman said. "I thought Mary Beth (Daub) pitched
very well in the first game, she really settled down in the middle
innings. The second game was not a defensive gem, but now it's
playoff time and we're really looking forward to Amherst this
weekend."
The opener was tied at three entering the seventh inning.
Sophomore Carly Ameen ignited the rally with a single to center
field. First-year Oriana Mcgee then laced a double down the left
field line. RPI's Sara Finkbeiner replaced Jen Bach on the mound
and intentionally walked Joey Lye to load the bases.
After a fielder's choice erased Ameen at the plate, Sansone
stroked a two-run single for a 5-3 lead. With two outs, senior
Emily Fowler-Cornfeld roped a two-run double. She finished the game
3 for 4 with three RBI.
In the bottom half of the frame, Daub worked out of a
bases-loaded jam by inducing a groundout to second base to end the
contest. She allowed just four hits over seven innings, walked
three and struck out six.
Sansone finished 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored for
Williams.
Game two saw RPI (19-5) get on the board first, scoring three
times in its first at bat. Finkbeiner singled to lead off the
inning and scored on a single by Bach. Julianne Bass followed with
a base hit and both runners scored on a single and an error.
The Ephs scored its first run in the second inning. Senior
Morgan Simpson opened the inning with a double. After a
sacrifice bunt moved her to third base, she scored on a groundout
by Fowler-Cornfeld The Red Hawks extended their lead to 4-1
in their half of the second inning on an RBI, hit-and-run single to
rightfield by junior Becky Bailey.
Simpson drove in the next two runs with a two-run, two-out single
to left field in the third inning to pull the Ephs within a run,
4-3. Fowler-Cornfield, the next batter, plated two more runs
with a triple to right centerfield to give the visitors a 5-4
lead.
RPI came right back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the
inning, thanks to a two-run triple to leftfield by sophomore
shortstop Alysia Rochminski. A bunt single by Finkbeiner
scored Rochminski for a 7-5 lead.
The Red Hawks added three unearned runs in the fourth inning for a
five-run margin but the Ephs got two back in the fifth with a
two-RBI single by senior Libby Copeland-Halperin. Rensselaer
answered with a run before the game was called due to darkness.
