MIDDLETOWN, CT -- The Williams College men and women's swimming and diving teams soundly defeated both Tufts and Wesleyan at Wesleyan; the men went 172.5 to 127.5 over Tufts and 226 to 73 over Little Three rival Wesleyan, and the women went 175 to 115 over Tufts and 174 to 111 over Wesleyan.  The Ephs claimed first place victories in 20 of 32 total events and showcased their team depth by placing first, second, and third in 6 events.

Though heavy traffic caused a delay in the meet, Williams women showed their focus and set a winning tone out of the blocks by sweeping the 200 yard Medley Relay, the first event of the day.  “The momentum from last week's big win over rival Amherst brought the team energy and focus throughout the long day, resulting in a very solid meet,” remarked captain Sophia Sequeira '10.  Caroline Wilson '13, Logan Todhunter '12, Ellen Ramsey '11, and Christina Metcalf '10 notched multiple wins and Abbie Deal '12, Kate O'Leary '13, and Kathryn Ha '13 provided several places, showcasing the depth and talent of the underclassmen.

The Williams men began the meet with second and third in the 200 Medley Relay and picked up speed in the 1650 Free, the next event, as Gary Roberson '11 picked up a win (16:22.22) followed by fellow Ephman John Armstrong '13 (16:41.30).  Roberson also contributed to the 400 Free Relay win with Philip Treesh '13, Paul Dyrkacz '13, and Tom Vieth '13 (3:10.66).  “The men won a tight race and found a way to win.  We emphasized relays this week and they did a great job coming through,” said head coach Steve Kuster.  Ben Wampler also won both the 50 and 100 Free, and Stuart Hogan '12, Chris Corbett '13, and Worth MacDonald '11 had great races.

“Everyone had standout performances in some events that we don't typically swim,” commented captain Christina Metcalf.  The Ephmen and women “did a good job with their hard week of work,” explains Coach Kuster, “and rose to the occasion to show both team and individual depth.”

The men and women's swimming and diving teams will race at home a gainst Union at 6pm on January 19, 2010.
