CASTLETON, VT -- The Williams College women's hockey crew picked
up a much-needed road win this evening on foreign ice, as they took
down the Spartans of Castleton State by a 3-1 margin in
non-conference action. With the victory, the Ephwomen to
improve to 6-7-2 overall, while the Spartans fall to 3-14-1 on the
year.
Rookie forward Nicolle Perry, who has contributed to the
Williams scoring on several occassions this season, turned in her
largest contribution yet, as she lit the lamp twice in the second
period to earn her 3rd and 4th goals of the year and put the Ephs
up for good.
After an offensively fruitless opening twenty minutes for both
sides, Perry found herself with a breakaway midway through the
second and made good on the chance at 11:06 to give Williams the
1-0 edge. Exactly 48 seconds later, Perry struck again, this
one coming off a rebound produced by senior Taurey Taussig, who had
an assist on both Perry goals. Sophomore Kristen Tubbs also
had an assist on the freshman's game-winner.
In the beginning minute of the final frame, the Spartans showed
signs of a potential comeback when sophomore forward Sterling
Nelson beat senior goalie Sara Plunkett over the glove to cut the
Eph lead in half. But it would be the only attempt to get by
Plunkett, as she finished with 13 total saves en route to the
win. Tubbs would put things out of reach at 10:15, netting a
shorthanded score with help from a nice defensive play by Sarah
Herr to seal the 3-1 win.
The purple and gold will need the momentum and confidence from
this road victory, as they head into a decisive weekend of
conference play. They will host Wesleyan this Saturday at
7:00 PM on the Lansing Chapman Rink in Williamstown before taking
on the 2nd-place Bantams of Trinity on home ice at 3:00 PM the
following day.
