WILLIAMSTOWN, MA –
Williams used a trio of late goals to break a scoreless tie and
come away with a 3-0 win over NESCAC foe Colby.
Junior Ryan Young deflected a Evan Dugdale pass into the net with
two and a half minutes left to score a goal that would prove to be
the game winner. Sophomore Ryan Purdy played
stellar in net, turning away all 31 of the Mule's shots for
his first shutout of the season.
The first period was largely
uneventful. The Ephs got the best chance of the
period 10 seconds in off the opening face off.
Freshman Evan Dugdale picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone
and skated in on a 2 on 1. He fed the puck across to a
streaking Ryan Young '11 who just missed tapping the puck
in. The rest of the
period was back and forth hockey with neither team able to generate
any solid scoring chances. With three minutes to
go in the period Williams had a flurry of shots in front, but
sophomore Justin Troiani just missed putting the Ephs on the board,
shooting the puck just wide.
Both teams had a few solid chances in the
second period, but the goalies held strong. Two
and a half minutes into the period freshman Cody Skinner received a
pass from classmate Eric Rubino and took a shot from the slot that
rang off the far post. Two minutes later a Colby
forward broke free all alone, but sophomore Ryan Purdy came up with
a huge save. He then was able to stop a number
of rebounds and cover the puck. With four
minutes left Young flashed through the slot and redirected a
Dugdale pass on goal.
Two minutes later Skinner gathered the puck behind the net and sent
a pass to the front of the net where junior Ben Contini fired a one
timer that was robbed by the Colby goalie.
The third period started off like the previous
two, but ended in a flurry of goals for the
Ephs. Through twelve minutes neither team could
create any good chances, but the action picked up as the clock
ticked down. Colby
thought they had taken a lead when their forward had a point blank
chance in front. His shot found its way behind
Purdy, but the talented Eph netminder was able to
reach back and keep the puck from crossing the
line. Purdy made a few more huge saves to
preserve the deadlock, and slowly the Ephs began to feed off the
play of their goalie.
The Ephs finally got on the board on a fluke goal 17:24 into the
period. Dugdale kept
a bouncing puck in the zone and turned to dump the puck back to the
far corner. Junior
Ryan Young battled off his check and deflected the puck to the top
corner. Williams
sealed the victory with a pair of empty net
goals. Senior Captain Alex Smigelski buried a
backhander from the redline with 50 seconds to go, and sophomore
Ryan Scott scored on a slapshot with 3 seconds left to close out
the game.
The win closes out the month on a high note
for the Ephs, and improves their record to
10-3-3. The Ephs take on St. Michael's and
Norwich next weekend at home before playing arch rival Middlebury
on the 9th.
