WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College
Ephs women's hockey team took on the Wesleyan University
Cardinals this evening, and the Ephs skated away with a 2 -0
victory.
The victory marked the Ephs second win
this month over their Little Three rival from Middletown, Ct.
The first period was largely
uneventful. The Ephs had the better of play over
the first ten minutes of the period, but after a two unsuccessful
Eph power play opportunities midway through the period the
Cardinals stepped up their game to keep pace with the
Ephs. With four minutes to play in the period
the Cardinals had their best scoring chance.
Izzy Huston took possession of the puck at center ice and went in
one on one against net minder Sara Plunkett who was there to make
the big save. Not long after the great save by
Plunkett, Ashleigh Corvi came up with an equally impressive save
the Cardinals. A Wesleyan defender attempted to
make a breakout pass, but it landed on the stick of Torrey Taussig.
Taussig wristed a shot that was headed for the bottom corner of the
net until Corvi kicked out her leg to deflect the puck into the
corner. Both teams would trade opportunities in
the closing minutes, but to avail as they went to the locker room
tied at zero.
The scoreless tie would end at the 11:46
mark of the second period. Nicolle Perry
received a pass from Kristen Tubbs behind the net of Corvi and was
able to beat Corvi with a wrap-a-round goal. The
Ephs nearly added another with 2:24 to go as Hannah Systrom found
Eliza Foster on the cross-crease feed, but Corvi was able to slide
over to make the save to keep the Eph lead at
one.
Play in the early stages of the 3rd
was even for the most part. The Ephs had a
quality s oring opportunity with 10:48 to play but Corvi came up
with a diving save as Eliza Foster tried to stuff the puck inside
the pipe. At the fifteen minute mark the
Cardinals went on the power play, but the Eph penalty kill unit,
especially Kristen Tubbs, was up to the challenge as they kept the
Cardinals off the board. Moments with the
teams playing 4 aside Hannah Systrom found Tracy Ferriter on the
back door pass, and Ferriter knocked the puck past Corvi to bring
the Eph lead to 2-0.
Sara Plunkett finished with 19 saves for the
Ephs while Ashleigh Corvi stopped 37 shots for
the Cardinals.
After the game, coach O'Neil said,
“It is always nice to get a win, even when we didn't
connect on offense the way we have been over the past few
weeks.” She went on to say, “We will need to put
together a solid 60-minute effort tomorrow afternoon against a very
good Trinity team.” O'Neil praised the effort of
Corvi who kept the Cardinals in the game with many spectacular
saves.
The win brings the Ephs overall record to
7-7-2, white the loss drops the Cardinals record to 3-13-0.
The Williams women will be back in action
