MIDDLETOWN, CT -- The purple and gold looked as confident an
capable as they have all year in a dominant road performance this
evening against the Cardinals of Wesleyan University, blanking the
birds by a count of 5-0. With the victory, the Ephs leap back
over the .500 mark overall at 4-3-1, and pick up another conference
win in keeping pace with Amherst at the top of the NESCAC with a
4-0-1 record. Wesleyan's woes continue as they fall to 1-8-0
and remain winless in the conference.
Despite the high tally, the scoring in this contest didn't begin
until 2:12 into period two when freshman Becca Nichols fired a
wrister past goaltender Ashleigh Corvi for her second score of her
career. Senior veteran Tracey Ferriter added another at 11:10
from the right circle on the penalty kill to make it two-score
lead. Just seconds later, the red light flashed again over
the Cardinals net as sophomore Kristen Tubbs tallied her second of
the season in similar right-circle wrist shot fashion.
The Williams offense shut the door in the final frame, tacking
on a pair of flashy goals. The first developed out of a
drop-pass from Ferriter to junior defenseman Allison Page, who
skated from the point to the circle and drove a slapper by the
glove of Corvi at 8:43. Late in the period, the Ephs found
themselves with a two-man advantage, and freshmman pointman Sam
Weinstein found Ferriter streaking to the net, and she cashed in
for her second of the game. With two goals and an assist on
the night, Ferriter now leads the team with 9 points (3 goals, 6
assists).
Williams star netminder Sara Plunkett had little to deal with,
but the eight shots she did face were all turned aside. The
Eph defense, which started the season hot but cooled off in the
last three games, looked to be returning to their early-season form
in tonight's game. They hope to continue their suffocating
play as the squad heads to Trinity for another conference battle
tomorrow at 3PM.
