AMHERST, MA - The Williams College men's
swimming and diving team defeated the Amherst College Lord Jeffs
with a score of 125-118. The men's victory rounded out a very
positive day for the Ephs, as the women's team swam to a 207-91
victory over Amherst earlier in the day.
The team got off to a slow start, dropping the 400-yard medley
relay and 1000-yard freestyle. Junior Gary Roberson redeemed the
Ephs with a win in the 200-yard freestyle by earning an NCAA
'B' time of 1:42.64, while fellow junior Ben Wampler set a
pool record of 20.92 in the 50-yard freestyle. Wampler then sped on
to earn another NCAA 'B' time for the Ephs with his
performance in the 100-yard freestyle.
A critical victory for the Ephs was earned thanks to first years
Chris Corbett and Paul Dyrkacz, who came in first and second in the
200-yard breaststroke race. Diving was also a strongpoint for the
Ephs today, as Alex Long and Chris Milliken shut out their
competition in both the one and three meter dives. Long earned the
top spot in the one-meter dive with a score of 259.20, and Milliken
took the three-meter with 236.02.
"The biggest events of the day were the diving events and the
200 breaststroke," said head coach Steve Kuster. "The divers really
powered us to victory and I hope they feel good about what they
enabled us to do today," said head coach Steve Kuster. "The 200
breaststroke all but sealed the meet for us and was crucial.
First years Chris Corbett, Paul Dyrkacz and soph Greg McElroy all
had great swims."
"I knew the men's meet would be a back and forth affair," state
Kuster. It was a really exciting meet and I am very happy for
our guys that they pulled it out in the end. There were a couple of
huge swims for us and Gary Roberson had the first winning the 200
free with a great time. I think that really got us
going. Ben Wampler had two good swims and wins after that
that were also key."
"Other stand out swims came from first years Phil Treesh and John
Armstrong," noted Kuster. "I think the guys are fired up, and they
should be, we beat a good team today. There is a lot more to
accomplish, but certainly this is a win to enjoy."
The Ephs defeated the Lord Jeffs in 7 out of 13 total events,
which was just enough to seal the win in this back-and-forth
struggle between the two teams.
The Ephs' next competition will be January 16th vs. Tufts and
Middlebury.
