AMHERST, MA--Williams (1-1) fell 5-4 to
rival Amherst (1-0). This weekend's loss comes on the heels of a
9-0 victory over NEWMAC-foe Wellesley. Amherst leads Williams in
the all-time series 32-23, and this is Amherst's second victory in
a row.
Williams fell behind early, when No. 1 pair Kristin Alotta and
Nicole
Reich fell to Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin 8-1. Nancy Worley and Taylor French
responded with an 8-6 win over Natasha Brown and Laura Danzig, but
unfortunately, No. 3 pair Caroline Capute
and Lindsay
Thygesen fell 8-4 in a close match to Mimi Bell and
Jennifer Newman.
Head Coach Alison Swain said "the team needed to make some
adjustments, and we did, but we didn't make them soon enough."
The Ephs were down 2-1 entering Singles play, and soon fell one
more behind when Kristin Alotta lost 6-3, 6-3 to Brewer. Nancy
Worley and Nicole Reich won each of their matches to tie the score
at 3-3. Worley defeated Laura Danzig 7-6(1), 6-2 while Reich
downed Laken King 6-0, 6-1.
Coach Swain said "We did a better job of making adjustments, and
we played very tough tennis. We played smart, but there is
room to improve."
Then Amherst's Carlissa King defeated Caroline Capute 6-4, 6-3
to regain the lead, but Kathleen
Elkins beat Caroline Richman 6-1, 6-3 to make the score 4-4. In
the final match, Gabby Devlin defeated Kara
Shoemaker 6-3, 6-4 to secure a 5-4 win for Amherst.
Coach Swain said she was "very excited by our
potential to improve and how well we competed today. The three
freshmen in our line up did a good job, as did many of our
returners."
Amherst and William will not meet again until the NESCAC season
begins in the spring. Williams will head to Wesleyan next week to
compete against the Cardinals as well as Tufts.
