BOURNE, MASS - The Williams College men's hockey team (4-0-0) continued to impress Saturday afternoon, getting goals from six different players en route to their first road win of the season at Gallo Arena, 6-1 over Babson (2-2-0).
After building a three-goal lead in the first two periods, the Ephs scored three more goals in the final period to put the game out of reach for good.
John Wickman '13 led the way for the Ephs with 3 points on one goal and two assists. Evan Dugdale '13 and Matt Masucci '11 each contributed a goal and an assist, while defenseman Stephen Maier '12 tallied two assists.
Dugdale got the scoring started for Williams midway through the first period off an assist from Masucci. That would be the only goal of the period, as both teams were limited to less than ten shots in the first twenty minutes.
The Ephs extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second period when Sasha Voloshin '12 scored off assists from Maier and Bryden McGhee '14. They would widen this lead midway through the period when Eric Rubino '13, assisted by Wickman and Maier, scored his fourth goal of the season to make the score 3-0. Goalie Ryan Purdy '12 made several key saves to keep the Beavers off the board.
Purdy had another stellar game between the pipes, making a season-high 41 saves while only allowing one goal in 60 minutes of play. His counterpart, Babson goalie Andrew Peabody, made 29 saves on 35 shots, allowing 6 goals in 60 minutes of play.
Spurred by Purdy's solid goaltending, the Williams offense exploded in the final period with three goals to seal the win. Ben Contini '11 started things off, taking a nice pass from Justin Guttek '11 and putting it into the net.
Babson would respond two minutes later with a goal of its own from Jay Halesey, but the Ephs stymied any attempt at a comeback with an unassisted goal from Masucci less than a minute after that.
Wickman capped off the scoring for the Ephs with a late goal assisted by Dugdale.
Ten different players recorded points for Williams on Saturday, with Purdy even adding an assist to the cause. It was definitely a team win for the Ephs, and Coach Bill Kangas was pleased with his team's overall effort: "We had all four lines playing well, and I thought we played three periods of smart hockey." Added Kangas, "Babson is a very good team which I'm sure we will see later in the year, so it was important for us to come out and play well."
Williams will need another strong effort Sunday night, as they take on nationally-ranked Manhattanville (5-2-0) at Lansing Chapman Rink. The game starts at 7 PM.
