Williams falls to Colby, 4-1

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—The Williams College Ephs fell in their second straight game, dropping 4-1 to Colby.

The opening frame featured back and forth play, with strong puck movement and pressure on both ends. The Mules got on the board early in the contest, thanks to a goal from Annie Papadellis 2:08 into the first period. Meghan Tedoldi picked up a loose puck in the low corner of the Ephs' defensive zone, then dished a pass to Papadellis, who fired a shot at Williams freshman goalie Rachel Nguyen. The puck eked through Nguyen's legs into the net, putting the score at 1-0 Colby.

After the remainder of the first period remained scoreless, both the Ephs and Mules kept the pressure on each other, with good scoring opportunities. Sam Weinstein had the opportunity to tie the game up for Williams about 9 minutes into the frame, when she maneuvered around a few Colby defenders and tried to slip a shot past Colby goaltender Brianne Wheeler, but was denied.

Colby capitalized once more with 3:51 remaining in the middle frame, off a powerplay goal from Liz Osgood. The Mules' Stephanie Scarpato and Caroline Chessare carried the puck down the right side of the ice and crossed the puck to Osgood on the left, who lifted a shot over Williams netminder Catherine Tremble's shoulder for the 2-0 lead.

The Mules clinched the game only 40 seconds into the final period on a powerplay, when Tedoldi tallied a goal of her own, with help from Scarpato and Osgood. Colby won a face-off in Williams' defensive zone, where the puck was passed to Tedoldi on the point. Tedoldi fired a high slapshot past Tremble, making the game 3-0 in Colby's favor.

Colby notched their final goal of the game with 16:12 left to play. Tasha Rivard capitalized on a Williams turnover deep inside the Ephs's blue line, controlling the puck and flicking a shot over Tremble's shoulder for the shorthanded tally.

However, Williams got on the board shortly after when freshman Gabrielle Vukasin notched her first goal of her college career. Senior captain Lauren Zurek played the puck to Kristen Tubbs, whose shot was redirected by Vukasin with 14:28 remaining in the game, finalizing the score at 4-1.

Eph coach Joey Lye was looking for her team to capitalize on the energy of last night's game against Bowdoin. "When we play our game start to finish, we're successful, but that didn't happen this afternoon. We just need to refocus and play hard right off the bat."

Williams' Nguyen and Tremble split time in net, while Wheeler played all 60 minutes for the Mules and recorded 29 saves. Nguyen finished with 9 stops, while Tremble racked up 18 saves in her two periods.

The Ephs now sit at 1-3 (1-3 NESCAC), while Colby improves to 2-2 overall (1-2 NESCAC).

Williams' next opponent is St. Anselm, another home contest. The puck drops at 7 pm Friday.
