Chestnut Hill, MA—Men's Swimming and Diving battled hard against Division I opponents Boston College (200-87) and Fordham University (167-131), although fell just short of pulling off upsets. Despite ending up on the short end of the score sheet, the Ephs have a lot to be proud of and threw down some impressive individual performances. "Obviously you hope to come out of these sorts of meets with a win," noted Head Coach Steve Kuster, "although I'm happy with the way we swam and performed today."
Senior Ben Wampler lead the way for the Ephs by dominating the field in the 50 yd freestyle with a time of 21.31. In an event decided oftentimes by hundredths of a second Wampler took the victory by nearly half a second. In contrast places 2 through 5 were all within that same margin. Wampler would also win the 100 yd freestyle in similar fashion.
The Ephs held strong in the distance and mid-distance events. Sophomore John Armstrong would take third in the 1000 yd freestyle, just ahead of Senior Gary Roberson. These positions would be reversed in the 500 yd freestyle, with Roberson the one capturing second, Armstrong third, and classmate Tom Vieth in fourth.
Sophomore Paul Dyrkacz also had a strong meet, winning the 200 yd breaststroke with a time of 2:09.84. Dyrkacz would be the runner up in the 200 yd IM, and take fourth in the 200 yd freestyle.
The tough road that the Ephs had to drive was aptly summed up by their gutsy performance in the 400 yd freestyle relay. It initially looked as though BC and Fordham were going to run away with the event, although the Ephs never gave up. While Fordham would ultimately come from behind to win the relay, Dyrkacz would roar home with an impressive split of 47.38 to secure third place.
The Ephs will look to bounce back next weekend as they take on conference foe Connecticut College.
