Williams Drops Season Opener to Defending NESCAC Champions

Box Score

WATERVILLE, ME -- The Williams women's lacrosse team (0-1) fell 9-7 in a close game at Colby (1-0). The Ephs and Mules battled back and forth, but Williams was ultimately unable to secure the win.

Colby opened the scoring at 27:51 with a goal by senior tri-captain Amy Campbell, followed closely with another by senior Kathleen Kramer. Williams battled back to take the lead scoring three goals in rapid succession. Sophomore Meera Sivalingam scored the first goal for the Ephs, followed by Taylor Fleishhacker, assisted by Margie Fulton. Senior Tracy Ferriter scored the Ephs' third goal, and final goal of the half.  Colby scored two more goals solidifying Colby's 4-3 lead at the close of the first half.

Amy Campbell once again opened the scoring for the Mules, netting her second goal of the game ten seconds into the second half. The game would remain at 5-3 until Williams freshman Sam Weinstein scored her first collegiate goal with 21:39 left to play.

Colby put in the next three goals, giving the Mules an 8-4 lead. Williams scored three of the four goals scored in the last seven minutes of the game to make things exciting. Williams sophomore Katie Ellis scored her first goal of the season on a free position shot, but Colby returned fire with a goal by freshman Catherine Kahl, her second of the game. Williams scored the final two goals of the game, including another unassisted goal by Weinstein and a free position goal by senior Co-captain Whitney Thayer.

Head Coach Chris Mason said that today's game was a result of “a lot of us together not having to great day” and that the team looked “tentative.” She said, “there was a lot of nervous ball handling and passing. We threw too many things away and forced too many passes inside the shooting and attacking area. That being said, it was a close game. Colby is a very good team, and they took advantage of our mistakes.” The team will look to improve their passing and decision making skills in the coming practices.

Mason also made it clear that the Eph defense, led by junior goalie Julia Schreiber, did a good job noting, “our defense played well and [Schreiber] had a very good game.” Schreiber faced 19 shots, making 10 saves. Colby keeper Sarah Warnke also played well, facing 13 shots, and stopping six.

The Ephs will be on the road again when they play RPI on March 16 at 6pm.
