Box Score
TROY, NEW YORK – Williams
lomen's Lacrosse (1-1) defeated RPI (1-2) 10-7 in their
second game of the season. The game was neck-and-neck, but the Ephs
were able to pull away in the second half and secure the
victory.
Williams sophomore Meera Sivalingam scored the first and
third goals of the game at 26:09 and 18:02, respectively. Freshman
Sam Weinstein contributed the Ephs second goal, her third of the
season. The three early goals effectively jump-started the Eph
offense, and provided a 3-0 lead in until RPI freshman Alissa
Peterson scored the Engineers' first goal off of a free
position shot.
Sivalingam scored again a few minutes later, making the score 4-1
with 11:03 remaining in the first half. RPI answered back, scoring
three unanswered goals before senior Tracey Ferriter was able to
net one for Williams. The Engineers' Stephanie Caouette was
able to put one more behind Williams junior goalie Julia Schreiber
before the close of the half, tying the game at five a
piece.
The game remained tied until 24:15 in the second half when
RPI senior co-captain Whitney Kukol scored her first goal of the
game. The Ephs responded moments later, when Sivalingam netted her
fourth, and final, goal of the game. The game would remain tied at
6-6 until Williams senior co-captain Whitney Thayer broke the tie,
making the score 7-6. Williams would score three more goals, two
for Weinstein and one for Ferriter, before RPI was able to respond.
Peterson scored the seventh and final goal for the Engineers,
making the final score 10-7 in the Ephs' favor.
Williams keeper Julia Schreiber faced 14 shots, and
stopped seven of them, while Rensselaer goalie Ariana Hood faced 17
shots, making seven saves. Williams head coach Chris Mason said
“Both goalkeepers played well. I was impressed with [Hood]
and thought she did a good job. Julia had a very good
game.”
Mason had mixed feelings about her team's
performance in the first half: “[RPI] is a very aggressive,
tough team, and although we started out with the lead, we flattened
out a bit in the second quarter. We weren't playing with
enough enthusiasm.”
However, she was pleased with the team's effort in
the second half, saying “we slowly got it together again.
After Whitney broke the tie I could feel the intensity
building.” After making the game 7-6, the Ephs sought to
stall and use up time. Says Mason: “We did a good job moving
the ball and using everyone, even our defenders were doing a great
job getting involved on offense. Our ball movement allowed Sam and
Tracey to beat their defenders one-on-one and score the final goals
of the game. Our game really picked up in the second
half.”
Mason says the victory was the result of a “pretty
good team effort” although she does mention that Sivalingam
played particularly well: “Meera had an excellent game. We
need her all over the field, and she did a great job filling in
where we needed her to.”
Williams will host their first home game Saturday, March
20 against NESCAC Conference rival Bates at 12:00 PM.
