WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — Williams College
scored four straight goals to open the second half and pull away
from conference rival Bates Saturday afternoon, defeating the
Bobcats 7-5 at Renzie Lamb Field.
Bates (1-1 overall, 1-1 in the NESCAC) lost despite leading in
nearly all the statistical categories. The Bobcats outshot Williams
15-14, collected 21 groundballs to the Ephs 16 and won eight of 13
draw controls in the contest.
However, Williams goalie Julia Schreiber led a strong defensive
effort for Williams (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) making six saves, several of
those critical, and getting help from the likes of Sam Weinstein,
Meera Sivalingam, Quinn Brueggemann, Amy Siedlecki and Tracey
Ferriter.
"I thought we made careless, simple mistakes in the first half,"
Ephs head coach Chris Mason said. "But we came out with a little
more aggressiveness and fire in the second half and I think Tracey
Ferriter helped instill that in us. We played a solid game
defensively, and Julia (Schreiber) had a nice game."
Weinstein also scored twice for Williams during the Ephs'
four-goal run to start the second half that turned a 3-2 halftime
deficit into a 6-3 lead. Williams scored the tying goal 7:08 into
the half on transition goal as Weinstein converted a pass from Anne
Marie Burke on a 2-on-1 break to knot things at three.
Three minutes later, Katie Pettengill forced a shot past Bates
goalie Mara Krueger off a Kaitlin Ellis feed. Just 2:50 later, it
was Pettengill who delivered a great pass to a streaking Whitney
Kelly in front of the Bobcats goal. Kelly flicked a shot past
Krueger for a 5-3 lead. Only 2:16 later, Weinstein scored her
second goal, this time getting an assist from Margie Fulton.
Ferriter led the Ephs in groundballs with four and caused
turnovers with three. Bates turned the ball over 20 times in the
loss.
Bates responded with a goal from Joan O'Neil. After Fulton made
it 7-4 Williams, Bates' Jenna Dannis scored her second goal of the
contest with 1:13 left to make it 7-5. However, Williams' Ferriter
won the draw control that followed and Williams killed much of the
clock. When the Bobcats regained possession, Schreiber make a
terrific save of a nice shot by Dannis to the lower left-corner,
keeping it at 7-5.
Dannis finished with two goals and an assist for Bates. O'Neil
also scored twice. Krueger finished the day with five saves.
