ORANGE, CA -- There will be better days for the
Williams College softball team.
The Ephs opened their 2010 season Monday, but dropped both
contests, losing 9-4 to Lewis & Clark and then 10-0 to Chapman
University.
In the season opener against Lewis & Clark, the Ephs built a
4-0 lead before watching the wheels come off defensively. They
scored a run in the top of the first when Merliee Weston drew a
two-out walk, advanced to second and scored on a Cedar Blazek
RBI-single.
Williams upped its lead to 2-0 in the second when Amanda
Correnti singled, Oriana Mcgee singled and, after a double play,
Mcgee scored an illegal pitch. Two more runs in the fourth made it
4-0 Williams.
But Lewis & Clark responded with four runs in the bottom of
the fourth on two hits and two Eph errors, then went ahead with a
five run bottom of the sixth that inlcuded three more errors by
Williams fielders. All nine Lewis & Clark runs were unearned.
First year Megan Casey took the loss, but pitched well. She
allowed only five hits over six innings, did not walk a batter and
struck out six.
Williams had six hits in the loss, including a 2 for 3 day by
Mcgee. Weston, Blazek and Correnti each had their first collegiate
hit, and Jess Cross went had one hit and two RBI.
"I thought Megan Casey pitched very well, and Oriana Mcgee had a
nice day at the plate and in the field for us," Eph head coach Kris
Herman said. "Other than that, our defense was horrible."
Chapman blanked the Ephs in the nightcap, 10-0. Junior Caitlyn
Cain picked up the only Williams hit and that came in the top fo
the first. Cain stole second, but was left stranded in scoring
position.
Chapman scored twice in the first and five time in the second.
The game ended after five because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Mary Beth Daub took the loss for the Ephs, allowing 12 hits over
four innings, walking one and striking out two.
