ORANGE, CA — Junior Carly Ameen crushed
two home runs and first year Merilee Weston went 3 for 4 with three
RBIs Monday as the Williams College softball team doubled up Buena
Vista College Monday, 8-4. Earlier the day the Ephs dropped a 7-3
decision to St. Thomas (Mn.) College.
The Ephs improved to 3-9 on the trip with the win over Buena
Vista. They will play a doubleheader with Claremont Mudd Scripps
Tuesday beginning at 3:30 PST.
"Our top five hitters had 10 hits against Buena Vista and six
hits against St. Thomas, those guys have been getting on base a
lot," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "And any time your No. 8
hitter goes 6 for 7 over two games, that's a good sign. We know we
have a lot of potential to be good and we're trying to put it all
together."
Williams jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Buena Vista on Mary Beth
Daub's RBI-single in the first. Weston had an RBI-triple in the
third, part of a two-run inning that gave the Ephs a 3-0 lead. It
was 3-2 heading into the top of the sixth when Ameen ignited a
three-run frame when she hit the first of two long balls leading
off the inning. Emily Levy reached on a single, and after an out,
Allison Hart reached on a single. With two outs and the runners
moving, Weston lined a two-run single to the fence in center field
for a 6-2 lead.
Buena Vista rallied, closing the gap to 6-4, but in the top of
the seventh. Caitlyn Cain reached on a one-out single and Ameen
followed with a two-run shot to left. She finished the game 3 for 4
with two homers and three RBI.
Daub picked up the win from the circle, going all seven innings
and allowing eight hits and four runs, only one earned, while
walking one and striking out two. She was 2 for 4 at the plate with
one RBI as well. The Ephs finished with 15 hits as Cedar Blazek and
Hart also went 2 for 4.
The Ephs also jumped out to a lead in the opener against St.
Thomas, scoring twice in the top of the first when Oriana Mcgee
singled, Hart reached on an error, and after a sacrifice bunt,
Blazek ripped a long two-run double on a 1-2 pitch. Alas, some
sloppy defense allowed the Tommies to crawl back in the game and
they led 3-2 after four innings.
Williams briefly tied the game in the top of the fourth when
Mcgee reached on a single and later scored on Blazek's RBI-single.
Blazek went 3 for 3 with three RBI in the loss, as did Ameen. Mcgee
was 2 for 4.
First year Megan Casey took the loss after St. Thomas scored
three times in the bottom of the fifth and once in the sixth to
account for the final score. She allowed 11 hits over six innings
and all seven runs.
"I thought she pitched pretty well," Herman said. "They put a
lot of pressure on us defensively and we did not respond well. They
executed and we didn't. We're coming along, but we still need to
clean up things defensively. We will."
