Ephs suffer frustrating extra-inning loss to CMS, 5-4

CLAREMONT, CA — A late lead lost combined with 12 runners left on base and an error that ended the game equalled one frustrating loss Tuesday for the Williams College softball team.

The Ephs fell to Claremont Mudd Scripps in nine innings, 5-4. The second game was called because of darkness in the third inning and will not be made up. Williams fell to 3-10 in its trip out West.

CMS and Williams battled through a scoreless game for 3 1/2 frames Tuesday. The home team clung to a 1-0 lead entering the top of the sixth when the Ephs reupted for three runs. With one out, Mary Beth Daub singled and Jess Cross pinch ran for her. Caitlyn Cain followed with a single and when there was an error on the play, Cross scored. Carly Ameen followed with an RBI-single that scored Cain and Amanda Correnti reached on an error. Kaitin Dinet then fouled back to the catcher, who made a nice diving catch. An alert Ameen tagged up on the play and beat the throw home for a 3-1 Williams lead.

However, CMS scored single tallies in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to tie the game. Williams went ahead 4-3 in the top of the eighth, but wasted an opportunity to blow the game open, leaving the bases loaded. CMS scored a single run in its half of the eighth to knot things again, then won it with an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth.

"We had our chances to win this game both offensively and defensively," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "So we're a little frustrated by the fact we did not win because we know we're a better team than we showed today."

The Ephs outhit CMS, 12-7. Cain broke out of a slump by going 4 for 5 with a double, three singles and a run scored. Daub, Cedar Blazek and Allison Hart each had two hits for the Ephs.

Megan Casey took the loss, facing one batter in the bottom of the ninth. Daub went the first eight innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, all earned. She walked four and struck out two.
