WILLIAMSTOWN, MA– Williams (5-4/3-3
NESCAC) beat rival Amherst (6-3/3-2 NESCAC) in a fantastic comeback
game. Today's victory is the Ephs' first since
2000.
Amherst opened the scoring, putting one away early in the
first half. Williams sophomore Margie Fulton put one behind Lamia
Harik to keep the game close. The Lord Jeffs took the lead
again, but Fulton once again tied the game. Amherst then went on
the offensive, scoring three unanswered goals. Williams finished
the half down 5-3.
The Ephs started off slowly in the second half, with the
Lord Jeffs continuing to dominate the play. Amherst scored three
more goals before Williams was finally able to return fire.
Everything changed with seven minutes left in the game, when
freshman Sam Weinstein got the Eph offense rolling, scoring her
first goal of the game. The Ephs would go on to score six goals in
the remaining minutes of the game. Weinstein scored two more, and
senior co-captain Whitney Thayer also contributed. Senior Tina
Nawrocki netted two goals in the final two minutes to tie, and win
the game.
Head Coach Chris Mason described it as “a very
exciting game.” She said “It was great to finally beat
them and it was a really big win. The intensity that we played with
at the end of the game was great. We need to have that level of
intensity the entire game...Defensively we did very very well, we
had great goaltending and Schreiber made some really great saves.
We need to do a better job controlling the ball throughout
the midfield to give the other team fewer opportunities. It was
good win and mentally, it's always great to beat our
rival.”
The Ephs continue their non-NESCAC play next, hosting
Skidmore on Wednesday, April 14. The game begins at 6pm.
