Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — First year hurler Megan Casey made a four-run first inning from her teammates stand up Sunday, allowing just one earned run as the Ephs defeated Little 3 and NESCAC West rival Wesleyan 5-3, at Cole Field.

Williams improved to 6-13 with the win, 2-1 in the NESCAC West, while Wesleyan slipped to 15-9 overall, 4-2 in the division. Williams hosts Springfield College Monday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Sunday, the Ephs took advantage of two critical Cardinal errors in the bototm of the first, scoring four times without the benfit of a basehit. Caitlyn Cain opened the game by getting hit by a pitch. Merrilee Weston drew a walk, and a walk to Cedar Blazek loaded the bases with no outs. Mary Beth Daub's grounder to second was handled, but the throw home was wide, allowing Cain to score the game's first run. Amanda Correnti then hit a grounder to first, but the throw home was high, allowing both Weston and Blazek to score. After a groundout, first year Erica Wu lofted a sacrifice fly to center that plated Daub.

An RBI-double to left center by Alexis Krall allowed the Cardinals to cut that deficit to 4-1 in the top of the second. It stayed that way until the top of the fifth when two, two-out errors by the Ephs helped the Cardinals crawl within one at 4-3. Wesleyan's Meaghan Dendy had an RBI-single in the frame.

Williams produced an important insurance run in the bottom of the frame when Blazek singled to left leading off and moved to third on Daub's double to right center. After an out, Kaitlin Dinet ripped an RBI-single to left for a 5-3 advantage.

The Cardinals nearly tied the game in the sixth when Taylor Zavadsky laced a two-out single and Krall worked a walk. Tori Redding then hit a rocket to left center field that Ephs' center fielder Blazek made an outstanding running catch of near the warning track to end the inning.

Casey earned the win, giving up eight hits over seven innings while walking two and striking out one. Dana Levy took the loss for the Cardinals, eight hits over six innings while walking two and striking out two. She also allowed one earned run.

Dendy was 2 for 4 for Wesleyan with one RBI.  Weston and Dinet were each 2 for 3 for the Ephs, while Emily Levy came on and went 1 for 2.
